A trademark, trade mark, or trade-mark is a recognizable sign, design or expression which identifies products or services of a particular source from those of others. Like any other manga series, the works of Kiyohiko Azuma use these kinds of devices in their marketing in order to be recognizable and distinguish themselves from others.

Azumanga Daioh

Tagline

A page from the manga featuring Yomi and the slogan "You belong".

The tagline of Azumanga Daioh is You belong. The phrase is used on several pages between chapters in the manga.

Logotypes

Logo

The Japanese logo of Azumanga Daioh.

The series is usually symbolized with speech bubbles. These appear on every cover of the manga, as a part of the logo. Another phrase associated with the series is A!/Ah! (あ! A!), possibly because of the hiragana character being the first in the series' title. Aside from being said by characters numerous times in the manga, it sometimes appears in eyecatches in the anime, where a character utters this phrase (usually to express surprise or delight). In the English dub of the anime, the pronunciation is changed to "Oh", while it is still spelled as "Ah" in Japanese in the speech bubble shown on screen. The phrase "Ah" is also used on cover pages in Azumanga Daioh: Supplementary Lessons, and in merchandise for the series.

Azumanga Daioh is mainly associated with the colours red, yellow and orange.

Examples of usage

Yotsuba&!

Tagline

The series tagline or motto of Yotsuba&! is Today is always the most enjoyable day/Enjoy everything (いつでも今日が、いちばん楽しい日 Itsu de mo kyō ga, ichiban tanoshii hi), in line with the general mood of the series and Yotsuba's usual attitude. The phrase appears on pages between chapters in the manga.

Yotsuba with an exclamation point; from a 2011 daily calendar.

Yotsuba&! is associated with exclamation points; they appear both in the logo and title of the series and in other parts of the books, such as between chapters. Another symbol of the series is a four-leaf clover, given Yotsuba's name which is closely related to the japanese word for this leaf. The silhouette of Yotsuba's head is very similar to the appearance of one.

The main colours associated with Yotsuba&! are green and yellow.

Wallaby

Tagline

Are you happy

An example of how the term "Are you happy?" is used in Wallaby.

Wallaby's tagline is WHAT A BEING!, probably a reference to the unique condition of the series' central character Wallaby (Akira Warabi) and the similarity in pronounciation of the phrase to the title of the manga. Another commonly used phrase is different versions of Are you happy?, referring to how the character Lalilalulala obsesses over whether Warabi is happy or not throughout the series.

The tagline of Try! Try! Try! is ととと (To To To), similarly to how the title of Yotsuba&!Try! Try! Try!'s final incarnation, is written as よつばと! (Yotsubato!) in Japanese which is written using the same character.

The Try! Try! Try! logo.

Try! Try! Try! has a logo using the title written with Roman letters, even in the original Japanese version. Like Yotsuba&!, it draws on the four-leaf clover symbolism due to the main character's appearance and name, using a small clover as a part of the logo, although with only three leaves as opposed to four, for unknown reasons.

The manga mainly uses a green color scheme for its logotypes.
