This is the second chapter not to be in yonkoma format.

Title: June Special: Osaka's Half-Day

Published: Approximately July 2000 in Dengeki Daioh

Volume 2

Previous Chapter → 17

Next Chapter → 19

Synopsis[]

After eating spicy food, Osaka gets the hiccups and they never seem to go away. Her friends come up with all sorts of more-or-less crazy remedies and try them, but without success. Finally, the hiccups stop for an unknown reason, until the girls notice that Chiyo-chan now has the hiccups – Osaka inadvertently transferred them to her, and they have to start over.

Referbacks[]

  • Tomo asks the others whether they can go to Chiyo's summer house again during their vacation.
  • When Sakaki suggests that Osaka might be sick in the brain, Tomo and Yomi claim that should that be the case, it would explain Osaka's occasional weird behaviour, displayed in nearly every chapter up until this one.

Trivia[]

Characters[]

Cultural References[]

Sakaki says that the reason Osaka's hiccups never seem to stop might be that she is sick in the brain, a reference to the medical discovery of hiccups sometimes being connected to brain tumours.

Unanswered Questions[]

  • Tomo begins to say "if we go [to Chiyo-chan's summer house] again ...", but she never finishes her sentence.
  • It is unknown from where Sakaki got the information on how to get rid of hiccups, including the strange methods "drinking boiled persimmon stems" and "giving the hiccups to someone else". The latter may be influenced by a common Japanese suggestion to cure a cold being "to give it to someone else". This, however, does not work for hiccups.
  • How exactly Osaka's hiccups went away is unanswered.
  • We do not know if Osaka actually gave the hiccups to Chiyo-chan, and in that case, how.
  • It is not known how Chiyo lost her hiccups.

Memorable Moments[]

  • Yomi tricks Osaka into eating a flaming-hot chili croquette even though she doesn't like spicy food, which is what causes her hiccups.
  • Kagura's involvement in curing Osaka, which subconsciously seems to bring her closer to the others, since Kagura is always with them from this point forward.
    • In the anime version, Kagura's role went to Tomo, as the former wouldn't appear until the fourth episode (this chapter was adapted as part of episode 2), let alone receive a formal introduction until the sixth episode.
  • Osaka's hiccups suddenly stop, then Chiyo gets them instead, unfortunately.
