Sakaki surfs the Internet and comes across an article about an Iriomote cat that was killed in traffic. She suspects that the cat was the mother of the little kitten she befriended when they went to Okinawa. The girls are all very worried about the fate of said kitten. Sakaki says she plans to move out when she goes to college so that she can get her very own pet, since her mother is allergic and she can't have one as it is. When Chiyo and Sakaki walk home, they see a lot of cats coming their way, and soon it becomes clear that they are being led by Kamineko in an attempt to attack Sakaki. But just as everything seems hopeless, Yamamaya arrives and scares the cats away. This makes him exhausted, but they take him to a veterenarian who ensures that he will be alright. Because Sakaki thinks Yamamaya went through a lot of hardship to see her, she decides to keep him, but until she goes to college, he is to stay at Chiyo-chan's. Sakaki ends up naming her new pet Maya.
Sakaki talks about the school trip to Okinawa, the little kitten and its mother that she met there. Osaka also refers to it as "Pikanya" instead of "Yamapikarya" like earlier.
Like she mentioned before, Sakaki tells Kagura that her parents won't let her have a cat because of her mother's allergies.
Kagura says that even if Sakaki had a cat, it would hate her.
Again, Chiyo talks to Osaka about going to college in America.
Osaka found out earlier that Pyrenees, the type of dog that Tadakichi-san is, are from France, which is why Osaka calls him a Frenchman.
First, we find out that the former boss of the neighbourhood was a cat named Maru-chan, and Sakaki and Chiyo wonder who will be the next boss. Then, Kamineko convinces all the other cats that they should help it in attacking Sakaki.
When Sakaki had time to google cats during school time.
Whom Maru-chan was – a large, imposing cat like him has never been mentioned before.
When Chiyo talked to Sakaki about the cat catalog.
Whom Chiyo-chan's friend was that she would be staying with when she came to America.
How Maya managed to find Sakaki and get to her from Okinawa.
If Dr. Ishihara suspected that Sakaki and Chiyo were lying when they said Maya was a crossbreed.
In this chapter, it is not answered whether Maya and Tadakichi-san get along.
Sakaki, Chiyo and Osaka find out that Maya's mother is dead.
Sakaki decides to move out after she graduates and get her own pet. Chiyo decides to go to America and take Tadakichi-san with her.
Kamineko comes to attack Sakaki with its allies, but she is saved by the miraculous reapperance of Maya.
Sakaki decides to keep Maya, but that he will stay with Chiyo-chan until they graduate.
Whatcha doin', Sakaki-chaaan? Oh, I can tell you're on the Internet. I know that. Oh! That means you're surfin' the net! Forget that question.
Aww, the pikanya is dead!
This cat … I think it was that little kitten's mother …
That little kitten. I hope it's okay …
Allergies, huh …? Well, no way to get around that. WELL, ANYWAY! DON'T SWEAT IT! Even if you did have one, it'd still hate you!! SEE THAT!? YOU JUST GOTTA THINK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE! Y'KNOW!?
— Kagura (to Sakaki)
Tadakichi-san, the Frenchman … and Chiyo-chan, the Japanese girl … goin' to America! NO WAY YOU CAN RIGHTLY TELL WHO'S THE FOREIGNER THERE!
Well, well, it's Chiyo-chan! Look how you've grown! Why, I expect you'll be pushing seven feet in no time!
— Dr. Ishihara
I'm not sure what the right decision is in this case … But … I think Yamamaya had faith in me … and risked his life to come here. I think it must've been a terrible journey for him. It's my responsibility to see that his faith is rewarded.
