find out that Kimura has a wife and daughter. Chiyo, Tomo, and Osaka have ambitious aspirations for the basket scramble, yet Chiyo is the one out of the three to score a point. Tomo carelessly rolls a gigantic ball over Chiyo in the ball rolling. Osaka enjoys putting her face in flour in the obstacle course, only to lose her chance of winning. During the cavalry battle, Tomo is the horseman, while Chiyo, Yomi, and Osaka make up the horse. The horse collapses, partly because Osaka pretends to eat with chopsticks to figure out right from left, without confronting another team. Tomo tells Yomi, who is drinking juice to replenish, to drink water instead due to Yukari's promise. Tomo uses an empty can to get the attention of Kimura's wife, trying to find how loyal she is to her husband. During the scavenger race, Chiyo is assigned to look for someone stupid, borrowing Tomo to fit the description, but without telling her. For the three-legged race, Kaorin is given the chance to be partnered with Sakaki, since Chihiro has sprained her ankle. When the marathon begins, Tomo starts with a last spurt to take the lead, but she ends up in last place with Chiyo and Osaka. Sakaki and Kagura come in sixth and fifth, respectively, due to long-distance running being one of the things that Kagura is better at. Yukari’s class overall wins the festival, as Yukari starts to taunt Nyamo's class for losing. The episode ends with Yomi on a bathroom scale, unsatisfied with her weight change.

Referbacks

  • Yukari refers to the previous sports festival.
  • Osaka mentions that she can't handle spicy food. This we first learned of in the episode where she gets the hiccups from eating such food. She also mentions that cayenne is a type of chili pepper, and she did not know this previously.
  • The Class 3 students wondered earlier if Yukari only made Kagura join her class so they would win the sports festival, and here Yukari confirms this.
  • The girls talk about Kimura being an odd teacher which has been displayed before.
  • Once again, it is mentioned that Kimura is the executive sports fest committee chairman. He also shouts "FIRST PLACE!!!!" at the top of his lungs once again.
  • Osaka struggles with her flexibility again.

Trivia

Characters

Cultural References

  • When Yukari cheers for her class, she says "Ei, ei, oh!", which has no literal meaning, kind of like "Hip, hip, hurray!". However, unlike "Hip, hip, hurray!", it is used to get worked up rather than to celebrate. Since in English, team pep talks usually end with shouting the team name, "Ei, ei, oh!" was replaced with "Go class 3!" for subtitled translation.
  • Kimura draws a sketch of the outfit he thinks Chiyo should wear for the cheering contest.
  • Kimura shows photos of himself, his wife and daughter.
  • Osaka claims to be good at puzzles, before admitting that she lied.
  • When Kimura's wife tells her husband's students that she made him lunch, Tomo says "Lunch from a loving wife!" While the term "aisai bentou" literally means "lunch from a loving wife", it is a phrase that is often broadly applied to any lunch made for a man by his sweetheart, married or not.
  • Kimura's wife admits her husband's looks aren't currently in style and compares this to how 70s clothing is coming back in fashion, hinting that Kimura's appearance might do the same.
  • Yomi says she wants to lose the weight she gained from eating taiyaki pastries. This is a pastry shaped like a fish, because "taiyaki" literally means "grilled red snaper". The pastry is generally filled with a sweet red bean paste filling.
  • When Kagura tells the others where she placed in the marathon, she shows them the five fingers of her palm to indicate she came in 5th, and Osaka says "Paa?" in Japanese. "Paa" can mean a flat palm, often used in the context of "rock, paper, scissors". But if your head is "paa", it means you are stupid. Because the pun has to work with the palm and insult Kagura at the same time, in translation, it is used to insult Kagura's bust size instead.
  • Yomi uses the bathroom scale.
  • In the episode preview, Osaka mentions the plaster wall monster (nurikabe) and bamboo-and-paper umbrella monster (karakasa). The plaster wall monster originates from the seaside area of Fukushima Prefecture. The monster is said to suddenly appear in the path of someone walking, forming a wall that goes on and on in either direction, blocking that person's path. Supposedly, if you calmly poke the base of the wall with a stick, it will disappear. As for the umbrella monster, it is sometimes said in Japan that inanimate objects that have been tossed aside and abandoned turn into monsters. The karakasa is one such monster, which is often depicted as an upright bamboo-and-paper umbrella with two arms, an eye, and a leg, which it hops around on.

Unanswered Questions

  • How Kimura could have a sketch of Chiyo's costume prepared during the girls' conversation.
  • How Yukari knew about Kimura's wife having a lovely personality.
  • If Osaka actually thought Yomi was fat in contrast to herself.
  • Before the cavalry battle, the girls play rock-paper-scissors to decide on positions, but Osaka does it too later and makes the hand gesture for paper but says scissors. Why is unknown.
  • How Chihiro sprained her ankle, and if she was aware of the real reason why Kaorin didn't want to run with her (she got the chance to run with Sakaki instead).
  • What Kaorin was about to suggest that she and Sakaki would do with the flag before she fell.

Memorable Moments

  • Yukari forcibly leads Class 3 in a cheer while Minamo nonchalantly takes role next door.
  • It is revealed that Kimura actually has a wife and daughter, to the girls' great surprise and confusion.
  • Osaka and Chiyo, due to their bad athletic abilities, dread the upcoming marathon.
  • During the cavalry battle, Osaka tries to remember which hand you put the chopsticks in and in doing this sabotages for the others. It ends badly.
  • The girls meet Kimura's wife and find out she is indeed a very good person, though they do not understand her taste in men.
  • When Chiyo participates in the scavenger hunt, she is asked to find an idiot, and ends up getting Tomo to run with her.
  • Kaorin gets to run the three-legged race with Sakaki and they win, to Kaorin's great happiness.
  • Tomo aims to be in the lead in the beginning of the marathon before being passed by everyone else.
  • Class 3 wins the festival, a victory Yukari takes sadistic pleasure in rubbing in Class 2's face.
